William Floyd Collins was the greatest living cave explorer in American history.  On January 30, 1925, a boulder rolled on his ankle and trapped him, alone, in a narrow passage of Sand Cave near Bowling Green, Kentucky.  When people came looking for him they spent four days going in and out, one by one, to try to move the boulder.  Unfortunately, all the traffic caused a cave-in, trapping Floyd inside.

For 10 more days, workers slaved away around the clock trying to dig out a passage to Floyd. The rescue effort was a national sensation with the US Congress even taking hourly breaks to gather around the radio for the latest news.  Sadly, Collins died of exposure and starvation before he could be reached.

As a result of all the media coverage, the cave system in which Sand Cave existed was turned into Mammoth Cave National Park in 1941.  Collin's nearby grave was marked "The World's Greatest Cave Explorer."

That was 100 years ago last month.  Did you know who Floyd Collins was?  I didn't.  He was a household name just a few generations ago.  People believed his story and name would never be forgotten.  Out lives a but a vapor.  They are here for a moment and then gone.

James 4:14

Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

I think it's really cool that Floyd Collins explored those caves.  But if you want significance in your life, you won't find it in a historical marker bearing your name or an article about you on Wikipedia. Significance is only found in one place.  Jesus Christ.  The God of the whole universe knows your name.  He values you so much He sent his son to die in your place.  And He has a purpose and plan for your life.
